Many locations in Kalos are just absolutely gorgeous. It’s nice to be able to help out another player in a small way like that. O-Powers were extremely helpful, and also really fun to send to other people. Its absence is felt profoundly in later titles. The PSS is basically the peak of Pokémon online functionality. The 72 new species we got this time are a really solid set of designs. In general, this generation introduced a lot of really cool Pokémon. I think it nicely filled in a sizable gap among the existing type profiles, and allowed for more new design ideas. The Fairy type, which I basically can’t imagine the series without now. Clothing customization introduced for the first time, and even to this day, XY’s rendition of it is still my second-favorite in the series (after SwSh). Brought the series into 3D for the first time, with really high-quality models for over 700 Pokémon, each with tons of unique animations to bring them to life. Just going to bullet point what I like about each set of games: Gen 6 is probably my second-favorite generation after Gen 7. Felt to me like ORAS was kind of a far more fleshed out XY, and I'm sad that Z never became a thing as a result. Getting to catch Rayquaza after that fever dream Delta Episode was a fun bonus too. Sapphire was my first Pokemon game, and that game quenched my nostalgia so badly. Goomy line instantly became one of my favorites and Tyrantrum is my favorite fossil mon ever.Īlpha Sapphire made me tear up at times because of how nostalgic I am for RSE. Still, I enjoyed my time with the game, Mega Evos were definitely an interesting addition. The linearity of the games just didn't sit very well with me considering how much more intriguing the world design of BW was. I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by Y, but thought that Kalos was a beautiful region. I'd just finished Moon at the time and wanted to keep playing more of the series, since it had been forever since I actually played one of the games and finished the main story (Black, like six or seven years prior). I bought used copies of Y and Alpha Sapphire as part of a collection of games from someone a few years ago. Use bridge network mode if you want to allow your VMs to access the internet, communicate with each other, and be visible externally. Take a Closer Look at Setting Up the Internal Network Modeįollow along with the short video below to see how I configure multiple VMs to use the internal network mode: Bridged Network Mode In internal network mode, the VMs cannot access the internet and cannot be seen from other networks. Let’s go through the configuration for the Windows VM ( 192.168.100.1) and the Ubuntu VM ( 192.168.100.2) and check the result with a ping: Using a ping on a Windows and Ubuntu VM Therefore, you will have to allocate an IP address manually. Although they are on the same network, there is no DHCP server. If you start your VMs now, you’ll see that they have not been allocated an IP address. In our case, we don’t need to change these settings. MAC address – The MAC address of your virtual network card. Only activate this option in very specific cases for network tests. Promiscuous mode – Allows the card to see all packets in transit on the network, not only those intended for it. Type of card – The virtual network card model that your VM will see. In the Advanced section, you’ll see that you can also change certain settings: You must enter the same name for each virtual network card if you want your VMs to communicate. This name sets a tag for the private network, as a VLAN would do. In Network access mode, select Internal Network, and either leave the default name or choose another one. To do this, switch off your VM, and go to the Network configuration section. The simplest way to establish communication between the VMs is to put them all on an internal network using the internal network mode. This also means that they are on three different networks as it is impossible to allocate the same IP address to three machines on the same network. It's important that our three VMs have the IP address: 10.0.2.15 and that they can access the internet. Choose Wi-Fi preferences - Advanced - and find the IP address. You will see the InetAddress.Īndroid - open Settings and make sure you are connected to the VirtWifi network. Ubuntu - open Terminal, type ifconfig, and hit Enter. Windows - open Command Prompt, type ipconfig, and hit Enter. Use these instructions to find the IP address of each VM: You can check this by looking at the IP address given to each VM. It allows VMs to access the internet (if their host is connected ), but not to communicate with each other. Step 2: Configure the Network NAT ModeĪs previously mentioned, the default network mode is NAT. These are lightweight operating systems that need very few resources. If this is the case, try installing three Tiny Core Linux VMs. Here you are reaching the limits of what is possible with type 2 hypervisors. If you have performance problems when you launch all of your VMs simultaneously, it may be because your host system does not have enough RAM or you have not allocated enough to your VMs. You can find the Windows 10 VM disk here to create the VM we did in Chapter 3. There’s no need to create a new Ubuntu or Android VM – you can use the ones from the previous chapter. Let's start by looking at an NAT network. Retrieve database updates from a remote server which can be accessed via a URL. Regularly send requests to the other machines. The company has Android, Windows, and Linux machines, and you want to check if your app works properly in this complex environment. This was the context: you’re working on a multi-platform app for internal use only. Now that you understand all the network modes, let’s go back to our example from the first chapter. Similar to an internal network, but when communication needs to be allowed with the host. Similar to NAT, several VMs need to communicate with each other (impossible in classic NAT mode). You are using several VMs to simulate private networks that do not have external access or access to the host machine. It needs to be seen on the network as a physical machine with its own externally accessible IP address. Only use one VM to download apps, carry out updates, or surf the internet. This table shows what each network mode is best for: There are several network modes that define how your VM will access the network. However, you'll have to configure it if it doesn't work automatically. When you create a VM, a virtual network card is allocated by default, allowing it to access the internet. Some chat functions are also going to be disabled while using the Data Center Travel System, "due to the fact that it isn't possible to keep an eye on chat and cross-world servers outside the bounds of a logical data center." Following the launch of the new Oceania Data Center in FFXIV , the system is planned for a 6.1X Patch release, which lines up with the addition of even more servers. Adventurers " will be able to travel between different Logical Data Centers, as long as they are within the same Physical Data Center." For example, fans in North America will not be able to join Data Centers outside of their own region. Aether has always been the most popular FFXIV Data Center, even before the mass influx of new players last summer when every Twitch streamer and YouTube personality under the sun was migrating to Eorzea to catch up before Endwalker, and now it’s finally accepting new residents again. Data Center Travel is the next step in connecting the FFXIV community.Īn article on The Lodestone details both when and what players can expect from this new feature. The biggest restriction to the World Visit System is that players can only travel across their own server. Notably, Aether is the data center that a bulk of streamers, like Asmongold, have been playing on, though streamers are not the sole reason for the congestion. The system was the first time many adventurers could fly around together on multi-seater mounts, like The Regalia from FFXV. Four more worlds are planned to be implemented at a later date. Aether on the other hand has the raiding powerhouse that is Gilgamesh, which is by far the strongest single raiding server outside of Japan. A Discord Server List such as Discadia is a place where you can advertise your server and browse servers promoted by relevance, quality, member count, and more. Aether is a network of self-governing communities, and a tool for private communication for teams. What is a Discord Server List?Ī Discord Server List is a website that provides a way for you to find the Discord servers that you're looking for. Discadia uses a proprietary algorithm to deliver you the best Discord Servers that you're likely to be interested in. Using Discadia you can browse through thousands of servers, search, and filter by tags. The North American Data Center has four servers (Aether, Crystal, Primal, Dynamis) the European Data Center has two (Chaos, Light) the Japanese Data Center has four (Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor) and the Oceanian Data Center currently has one (Materia). While there's a huge range of Discord servers out there, not all of them may appeal to you. FFXIV has many servers hosted in four physical Data Centers in different regions. Discord is a website and mobile app that provides text, voice, and video communication through community created “chat groups” called 'servers'. The 2018 Tomb Raider movie is a Live-Action Adaptation of this game, with some elements taken from the second game. Also has an interquel comic, written by Gail Simone (with Rhianna Pratchett cowriting some issues), that bridges the gap between the two games, a novel picking up right after the first game, and another interquel comic starting after the second game written by Mariko Tamaki. Like the game, The Beginning was written by Rhianna Pratchett. It serves to flesh out the game's supporting cast, and largely deals with Whitman's struggle to fund the expedition to Yamatai. However, following a shipwreck that cuts her off from the rest of the expedition with no food or supplies of her own, Lara must learn to survive while fighting a dangerous cult that also calls Yamatai their home.Ī prologue comic, Tomb Raider: The Beginning, was produced by Dark Horse Comics as a pre-order bonus for Best Buy customers. The story opens with a fresh out of university, 21 year old Lara joining an archaeological expedition in search of the lost island kingdom of Yamatai, home of an ancient Japanese queen named Himiko who was fabled to control the very weather itself. Tomb Raider also serves as an origins episode for the franchise, showing how Lara Croft became the badass adventurer archaeologist we know and love. The game is the second continuity reboot of the Tomb Raider series. On April 27th 2016, the game was ported over to macOS and Linux by Feral Interactive. An updated version, titled Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014. Published by Square Enix and developed by Crystal Dynamics, it was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Roth: Sometimes you've got to make sacrifices, Lara. J Sherwani, Vishal Kapur, Jason DiCioccio and Faraz Khan all worked together on iTeleport, a premium app ($24.99) that lets iPhone and iPad owners remotely access their Mac or Windows PC desktops using their iOS devices. The initial use case for Screenhero was in the developer community, specifically for paircoding, and it was borne out of the need of the four co-founders, all developers, to work together remotely. That switchover can be time consuming compared to staying seated and sharing your workspace.” Even when people are in the same room, we’ve found that it can be better than physically coming over to someone’s desk. “Every time you have an instance to say ‘Come here and take a look at this’, you can screenshare with Screenhero. “Our long term vision for this is to make Screenhero your fundamental communication platform, eventually replacing Skype,” he says. Sherwani says the intentionally limited feature set is just for the short term. “Right now we don’t have audio or video chat but that’s because you can use Skype.” They have, however, already turned on a chat feature. “We wanted to make one thing that works better than anything else that is out there,” Sherwani says. Given that there are so many other ways of connecting to people online today, Screenhero’s founders wanted to pick one function first, and make that perfect, before considering how and if other features would get added in. In the perennial question of whether a startup has created a feature, or a potential platform, Screenhero is bullish on the latter. Screenhero’s approach, which uses Google’s VP8 video compression standard and WebRTC for network transmission, is in contrast to other existing solutions like Skype, GoToMeeting, and Google Hangouts, which variously require you to pass control to another user, or somehow both be able to use a single mouse at the same time. Similarly, sharing a full screen lets a person access your whole desktop in the same way, but across the whole range of apps that you may have open at the time. And, like a little mouse, you can chase after the second person undoing all the changes. So, for example, if you shared an open Word document, the other person could start typing, erasing scrolling and printing that document, as if that document existed on the remote computer. That person can then effectively use that window at the same time, and in the same way, as you do. Once you take that simple step, that’s it: you then have another mouse/cursor appearing on whatever it is that you have selected to share. “Some people you let only into one room others can go anywhere they like.” “Think of it like letting someone into your house,” says Sherwani. After you have initiated a session, you drag an icon on to the window that you want to share, or you select the entire screen. It works via a desktop client app and like Skype, you create contacts for quick connections (these are not listed in a directory at this point you connect by sending another user an invitation). Those who use Screenhero for the first time may be taken aback at just how easy it is for someone to become a user on your desktop. (note: I don’t have PowerPoint software installed on my own computer in that sense it’s also a way of sharing apps.)Īvailable now as a free beta to use on Apple Mac computers, a Windows version is currently in alpha testing and will be available soon. We were chatting in Screenhero’s own messaging service, as well as in a PowerPoint document. Part of the current batch of Y-Combinator startups, Screenhero is launching with a way of letting two (and potentially more) people work on documents, or even each other’s computer desktops, in possibly the easiest way to date, by simultaneously giving each collaborator an independent cursor and mouse, and complete control over a document, as if it were his or her own.īelow is an example of what I saw when co-founder J Sherwani shared his desktop with me. We all love the idea of being able to connect and work with people in our always-online day and age, but ironically, when it comes to document collaboration, a lot of the software designed to aid in that - WebEx, GoToMeeting and the rest - is actually more geared to presenting rather than actually letting people work together on things, in real time, or focused on documents within a particular platform, like Google Docs.Įnter Screenhero. Maybe you’re a talented percussionist who doesn’t need GarageBand’s virtual drummer telling you what to do, but if you’re me - a helpless guitarist who just knows what he wants to hear - then the sophisticated hand-holding is basically a godsend.Īnd it’s not all about drumming. Sliding the dot inside the matrix (a rectangular grid) adjusts the four parameters - simple, soft, complex, and loud - and allows you to hear in real-time how your tweaks are shifting what your virtual drummer plays. Photograph by James Peroįrom there, you can subtly tweak your drums further with an adjustable matrix if you’re not satisfied with the first iteration. GarageBand’s virtual drummer is a game-changer for anyone lacking in the programmed drums department. Options to tweak your drums include selecting a style/genre you want your drummer to play in (think “alternative” or “hip-hop”) and even get as granular as sub-genre (think “Indie Rock” or “Garage Rock.”) Instead of the old-school Apple Loop style of dragging and dropping your drums into a track and having to deal with whatever the pre-recorded loop throws (or doesn’t throw) your way, GarageBand’s virtual drummer lets you select a wide variety of parameters. The best part about GarageBand’s virtual drummer is that the convenience doesn’t necessarily come at the cost of quality or customization. And if, like me, you’re just demoing tracks that you intend to record with more professionalism later on, finding a drummer and then recording those drums in a way that doesn’t suck is a tall order. Anyone recording rock music knows that tracking drums can be a herculean task. One very notable change - if you haven’t used GarageBand in a while like me - is the inclusion of one of Logic’s best features, the virtual drummer. And automation! Never discount the beauty of being able to automate volume for track fade-ins and fade-outs. Photograph by James PeroĪnd then you’ve got a fairly generous array of software instruments, which - as a snob of VSTs and synths myself - aren’t the best, most original, digital instruments in the world, but have improved over the years to deliver something close to serviceable. Hipster apartment not required to make great music with GarageBand. For the latter, I connect my guitar via 1/4-inch cable to a PreSonus Studio 24c audio interface that links to my MacBook Pro through USB. You, of course, have the ability to slot in live sounds recorded through a microphone, or you can go direct-in with an instrument of your choice. Inside, the interface is as simple as it’s always been - a kind of modular and rectangular consensus of how any modern music production software should look.īut once you start peeling back layers of the GarageBand onion, you begin to see just how much functionality is hidden in that simple form. The last major update (not counting minor bug fixes) to GarageBand for the Mac was in 2013, but you wouldn’t know it when you fire up Apple’s iconic DAW, short for Digital Audio Workstation. And let me tell you, I was shocked to discover what exists inside that guitar-shaped icon today. But when I decided this year to start recording music again, I went back to my roots back to my parents’ basement back to GarageBand. It was, for me at the time, an Apple-made music revolution.Īs I moved beyond my teenage angst, I naturally moved on from GarageBand as well, transitioning to other digital audio workstations - Fruity Loops (later FL Studio) and then to Reason and eventually Logic. It was an idea that I - an angsty teenager with too few friends and too little confidence to start a band - could listen back to. It had pre-recorded drums (shout out to Apple Loops) it had a real direct-in guitar with digital distortion and naturally a guitar solo. But more important than its quality, was another, more meta factor: it existed. That’s to say it was redundant, unoriginal, incomplete, and not at all ready to be released unto the world. It was what real heads in the music-making biz call. I still remember the first song I made with GarageBand. Users have downloaded more than 4 million copies of DbVisualizer’s free and paid editions - and DbVis Software aims to further that growth for years to come through investments and maintenance of the company’s developer-centric values. “The idea was to have a single tool that could connect to any single database out there which gives you several benefit,” Martin said. “You don’t need to purchase different tools for each database the developers and analysts working with those databases only need to master a single tool and user interface so you also become more efficient,” Martin said.Īfter a year of coding, Roger made DbVisualizer available in July 1999 as freeware in beta.
